PRODUCTION NOTES

Challenge 1: Clean Execution of Self-Endpaper (Self-Lined) Hardcover Binding

The Challenge

Unlike traditional hardcover books with separate endpaper stocks, this publication uses a self-endpaper structure where the first and last interior pages are directly glued to the inner 3.0mm greyboard casing. Managing paper tension and glue coverage without causing inner page bubbling or warping was a key hurdle.

Our Solution

We optimized the water-based casing glue viscosity and micro-calibrated the pressing sequence. This ensured a perfectly flat hinge and smooth adhesion between the 157g interior page and the 3.0mm board, eliminating paper stress folds.

Challenge 2: Precision 120T Spot UV Registration on Matte-Laminated Jackets

The Challenge

During production, an engineering change moved the spot UV treatment from the inner hardcover casing onto the outer dust jacket. Applying 120T high-mesh spot gloss UV over a flexible, matte-laminated dust jacket required zero registration shift across long production runs.

Our Solution

We adjusted the jacket creasing parameters and used laser-guided registration marks during 120T screen printing. Temperature and curing speed were tightly controlled to prevent film expansion, resulting in crisp, glass-like spot gloss overlays.

Challenge 3: Landscape Format Spine Alignment and Crease Folding

The Challenge

Horizontal landscape books (254mm wide) experience higher lever-arm strain along the 177.8mm spine during reading. Ensuring clean, parallel jacket flaps (100mm) without misaligned creasing or spine drift demanded tight bindery tolerances.

Our Solution

We utilized automated inline scoring for the 100mm jacket flaps and calibrated the square-back casing tools. Every jacket was folded flush against the hardcover spine to deliver a snug, perfectly aligned fit.
