PRODUCTION NOTES
The Challenge
This book is part of an ongoing global city/art series. The hardcover binding is complex: the case is first fully wrapped in fine-spun cotton cloth, and then a printed paper cover is pasted on top, with a strict requirement that the cloth extends exactly 16mm (including the hinge) onto the front cover. The client demanded that the splicing position, finished dimensions, and overall visual effect match previously published volumes in the series with absolute precision. Even minor tolerances in this mixed-material binding can ruin the uniform aesthetic on a bookshelf.
Our Solution
Standardized Jigs & Golden Sample Matching: We introduced high-precision positioning jigs on the casing-in line to strictly control the 16mm cloth extension. Before mass production, we retrieved the "golden samples" of previous series volumes for on-site physical calibration, ensuring zero-tolerance consistency in joint positions across different printing batches.
The Challenge
The cover utilizes a fine-spun cotton cloth with a natural texture, wrapped over a heavy 3.0mm high-density greyboard. The design required matte silver foil stamping and debossing directly onto this fabric. Foil stamping on textured cloth often results in broken lines and incomplete coverage. Furthermore, applying the immense pressure needed for debossing risks tearing the fabric fibers or warping the internal thick board.
Our Solution
Pre-Production Testing & Tooling Calibration: Before mass production, we conducted rigorous pre-production sampling and pressure tests specifically for the designated matte silver foil. We custom-machined deep-engraved brass dies and calibrated the exact temperature and dwell time, achieving a crisp deboss and perfect foil adhesion without breaking the cotton fibers.
The Challenge
To achieve a specific artistic tactile feel, the inner pages were printed on 140gsm uncoated woodfree paper. Uncoated paper is highly porous and absorbent, leading to severe dot gain and color dry-back in standard offset printing. This is a critical risk for an art book that demands strict color matching to digital proofs.
Our Solution
HUV Instant Curing Technology: The entire text block was printed using advanced HUV technology. The ink is instantly cured by UV light upon hitting the paper, preventing it from sinking into the fibers.
Uncoated Profile Management: Our pre-press department applied a specialized color management curve designed specifically for uncoated stock (AC2014-Fusion-AM210L-Uncoated) during RIP. This allowed us to achieve vibrant saturation and sharp details on rough offset paper.
