PRODUCTION NOTES
The Challenge
The dust jacket features a deep, multi-tonal artistic cover print on 157g matt art paper that requires single-sided scuff-resistant matt lamination for long-term handling protection. Applying a low-gloss, protective film over heavy dark ink coverage can flatten tonal contrast, mute background gradients, and cause unexpected color shifts between pre-press digital proofs and post-laminated finished jackets.
Our Solution
Calibrated pre-press CTP plate output using the AC2017-Fusion-AM210L-Fogra39 curve specifically configured for coated substrates. Press operators conducted pre-production lamination tests, adjusting inline target ink densities on offset runs to compensate for the flattening effect of the scuff-resistant film. This ensured the final laminated jacket matched the client-approved digital color proof with pinpoint accuracy.
The Challenge
The publication requires a dedicated 2P single-sheet tip-in to be inserted precisely between Signature 9 and Signature 10 within a 162-page block. Tipping a standalone leaf into a 16P signature arrangement creates risks of page shifting, adhesive squeeze-out during hot-melt glue backing, or uneven block thickness during Smyth sewing.
Our Solution
Utilized automated inline page-tipping machinery with fine-metered cold-glue application along the binding edge prior to gathering. Maintained strict edge registration checks before routing the assembled block to Smyth sewing, preventing adhesive migration onto adjacent text pages while ensuring seamless page-turning continuity.
The Challenge
The edition incorporates non-printed 160g off-white cardstock endpapers featuring subtle two-sided color variance, where the darker/yellowish side must strictly face outward across 2/3 of the front and back endpapers. Additionally, a 3mm wide polyester ribbon bookmark must be anchored into the spine head with specific length exposure (270mm) and an angled, fray-proof tail.
Our Solution
Established standardized manual and machine loading protocols for endpaper cutting and folding to ensure consistent directional orientation of the darker cardstock face. Integrated a specialized ribbon-attaching station to hot-melt bind the ribbon at the spine head with precision tail exposure, finishing the tip with thermal angle-cutting to eliminate edge fraying.
