PRODUCTION NOTES
The Challenge
The interior of the book was printed on 157gsm matte art paper utilizing a specialized metallic silver ink. During the folding stage, the metallic silver ink base was not fully dry, which led to smudging and the shedding of silver powder onto adjacent pages. Because a portion of the signatures (16 signatures) had already been successfully folded without any varnish, applying a protective coating to the remaining problematic sheets carried a massive risk of causing a visual color discrepancy between the different sections of the book.
Our Solution
We implemented a secondary press run to apply a specialized HUV protective varnish strictly to the affected signatures. To guarantee absolute visual continuity with the unvarnished pages, we conducted meticulous single-sided pre-tests to fine-tune the varnish mix. This invisible protective layer successfully sealed the metallic ink and prevented any further silver shedding without altering the original color profile of the printed pages.
The Challenge
The hardcover design dictated that the three edges of the book block be finished with bright silver edge gilding. The primary difficulty was that the color and reflective quality of this edge gilding had to perfectly match a specific 180gsm mirror-finish silver cardstock used for the book's cover.
Our Solution
We strictly controlled the edge-gilding process to align precisely with the client's specific material aesthetic. Our production team utilized the physical 180gsm mirror silver cardstock as the definitive visual benchmark, carefully calibrating the foiling materials and application parameters until the gilded book edges flawlessly mirrored the exact metallic finish of the cover stock.
