Challenge 1: Resolving Ink Set-Off on Uncoated Endpapers
The Challenge
During the initial print run, the endpapers—printed on 160gsm uncoated woodfree paper—suffered from "set-off" (wet ink transferring to adjacent pages). Uncoated paper's porous nature, combined with heavy ink coverage, often leads to slow drying times, causing smudging when the sheets are stacked or folded.
Our Solution
We initiated an urgent remedial reprint for the affected components, implementing a dual-varnish protective strategy. After printing the CMYK layers, we applied a spot oil-based matte varnish on the front and a full-coverage oil-based matte varnish on the reverse. This instantly sealed the ink layer, preventing any further ink transfer while maintaining the desired premium tactile feel of the uncoated paper.
Challenge 2: Absolute Color Consistency in Remedial Reprints
The Challenge
Reprinting only the endpapers to be bound with the existing, already-printed text blocks means there is zero tolerance for color deviation. If the newly printed endpapers look even slightly different from the original run, the visual continuity of the premium cookbook will be broken.
Our Solution
We retrieved the exact CTP (Computer-to-Plate) data from the original print run to guarantee identical dot structures. Furthermore, our pre-press team applied the Fogra52 color management profile specifically designed for uncoated substrates. Press operators were then strictly mandated to manually micro-adjust the ink keys to perfectly match the historically "signed-off OK proofs."
Challenge 3: Maintaining FSC Chain of Custody During Emergency Reprints
The Challenge
This cookbook is a strict FSC-certified eco-friendly project. During emergency remedial reprints, rushed material procurement and accelerated production timelines pose a high risk of mixing non-certified paper or breaking the strict FSC tracking protocol.
Our Solution
We rigorously enforced our FSC CoC (Chain of Custody) procedures throughout the reprint. The specific 160gsm FSC-certified woodfree paper was isolated and physically tracked from the warehouse directly to the press. All production tickets and printed FSC logos were meticulously verified, ensuring the final assembled product retained its complete eco-friendly credentials despite the production disruption.
